HTC 18ct Gold HTC One revealed to celebrate MOBO music awards
HTC has revealed an 18ct gold version of its critically well-received HTC One Android smartphone flagship. Officially dubbed the Gold HTC One will be presented to the winner of the Best Newcomer category sponsored by the Taiwanese handset maker at the MOBO Awards in Glasgow on October 19. Interestingly, the device only features the MOBO 18 logo laser etched on the rear, with the logo of the company's former partner Beats Audio conspicuously absent, despite the fact that the special edition device has been made to honor a music event.
"The best artists have always been given gold discs to celebrate their success, but today most people listen to music on their phone," said Phil Blair, HTC President, Europe Middle East and Africa. "We wanted to celebrate that fact...We're sure the winning MOBO artist will love their unique phone and we will even be giving a lucky member of the general public the chance to get their hands on one soon too," Blair added.
HTC says that each device is valued at approximately $4,400 and that there are only five in existence. While the fate of two of the devices is known, it is not known whether the remaining three will be available to purchase or not. Gold smartphones have become particularly popular following the launch of the iPhone 5s, which shipped in limited supply to Western markets when the iPhone 5s went on sale on September 20. Since then, a gold-colored version of the HTC One has surfaced in images, while Samsung has also made a gold-colored Galaxy S4 available.
