HP CEO: Intel and Microsoft turning into 'outright competitors'

Changes push HP to consider Chrome OS

HP CEO Meg Whitman has blasted Intel and Microsoft, accusing the companies of essentially transitioning from partners into direct competitors. Speaking to Wall Street analysts yesterday, the executive stressed that HP has consequently adopted a multi-platform strategy that will put more emphasis on alternative operating systems such as Android and Chrome OS.

"HP's traditional highly profitable markets face significant disruption," Whitman said, as quoted by Business Insider. "Wintel devices are being challenged by ARM-based devices. We are seeing profound changes in the competitive landscape. Current partners like Intel and Microsoft are turning from partners into outright competitors."

The comments appear to be a direct reference to Microsoft's Surface convertible tablets, which marked the company's own foray into the Windows hardware market. Intel's cloud services are also viewed as a a threat to HP's own offerings.

HP has yet to show clear success in its turnaround efforts, pushing back its estimated time-frame for growth until beyond 2014. The company is approximately halfway through its layoffs, which have already displaced approximately 28,000 employees.
