Mobile OS, Google smartphone alleged to be shown early next week

The Google Nexus 5 and Android KitKat, version 4.4, will be coming out next week, according to a new rumor from developers. The next Google smartphone and the updated mobile operating system will apparently be launched together on Tuesday October 15th, with the Nexus 5 also said to carry a price tag lower than 250 ($400).

Developers attending the two-week Google Launchpad start-up event allegedly provided the details to CNet, though it is not clear if the Nexus 5 and Android KitKat will be available to buy or download on that day, or if it will be more a public launch with a later shipping date for each. The same sources claim that Google is providing attendees with KitKat bars and servings of Key Lime Pie, with both foodstuffs referencing the two names Google had for the Android version.

The next version of Android is thought to be an "optimized OS" that will work well with devices using 512MB of RAM, potentially extending the useful lifespan of older devices, as well as some form of mobile payments system, printing options, and little in the way of cosmetic changes.

The Nexus 5 is believed to have a 4.95-inch 1080p IPS display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.3GHz with 2GB of RAM. Capacities of 16GB and 32GB have been touted, along with a rear 8-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and wireless charging.
