Sony launches Xperia Z1f, rare high-end 4.3-inch smartphone

The rumored Xperia Z1f has now been made official and will make its debut on Japan's NTT DoCoMo network. The device takes several of the key specifications from the 5-inch flagship Xperia Z1 including its 20.7-megapixel camera, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU and Triluminos for mobile display. It is targeted at Android power users who want high-end specs in a 4.3-inch form factor, although it weighs in at 140 grams and is 9.4mm thick, while display resolution drops from 1080p to a still respectable 720p.

While the weight and thickness may disappoint some users, it also carries over the glass front and back, along with aluminum frame, which has been critically well received for both its build quality, but fit and finish as well. Like the Xperia Z1, which grew in thickness and weight over the Xperia Z, the Xperia Z1f has a larger camera sensor and more complex optics, adding to its depth. Further contributing to the depth of the Xperia Z1f, is the need for additional thermal space to accommodate the high-powered CPU, which is unusual for a 'mini' version of a flagship device.

Sony has also packed in a generous battery, with a capacity rated at 2300mAh. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and support for 4G LTE. Built-in storage is capped at 16GB, although this is expandable with a micro SD card. As with a number of Xperia smartphones, the Xperia Z1f is also water and dust resistant. It is available in black, white, lime and pink, although pricing and US availability has not yet been announced.
