Rumored LG G Flex curved display smartphone appears in press renders

The rumoured LG curved display smartphone has surfaced in the first leaked photos of the device. Like the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Round, the LG 'G Flex' utilizes bendable display technology to create a smartphone design with a radical curve not previously seen in a smartphone display. Interestingly, LG has opted to put its curve along the x-axis of the Flex, rather than along the y-axis like Samsung's device. While intriguing, the design approach has yet to be proven to offer genuine functionality from an ergonomic perspective, with critics suggesting that it is likely to be another example of Android makers simply applying technology for technology's sake.

Other than a rumored 6-inch display size, few other specifications about the forthcoming device have been revealed, although it is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core CPU paired with 2GB of RAM. LG confirmed that it has begun mass production of a 6-inch curved phone display in early October, but has separately also indicated that it will be shipping a curved smartphone in Q4 - current indications are that the device will ship in November. According to people familiar with the device, it offers a great viewing experience for watching movies on the go, but how it will feel in user's pockets and perform in general use will be something we will focus on when we get our hands on the device.

Both Samsung and LG have been leaders when it comes to flexible display technology. Both manufacturers have released televisions that employ curved displays, which make sense when it comes to viewing an image on a large TV set when not sitting directly in the middle of the screen. Samsung recently launched a competition inviting ideas from the public on ways in which its bendable OLED panels could be utilized commercially. One other more obvious application is the use of bendable display technology in smart watches that wrap around wrist, with Apple among those rumoured to be investigating the display technology for that purpose.
