Intel next-generation 'Broadwell' production start delayed into 2014

New 14nm process chipset to deliver performance increase over Haswell

Today's Intel earnings conference call also revealed that the next generation of Intel microprocessor after Haswell, the "Broadwell" line will be delayed by three months. Production of the new 14nm process chip will now beginp in the first quarter of 2014, rather than in November of this year as originally envisioned. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said that current yields of prototype processors are suffering from a "defect density issue" keeping productive yields down.

Amped Wireless adds to 802.11ac portfolio with APA20 high power router

Wi-Fi communication product maker Amped Wireless today announced the launch of the APA20 High Power 700 milliwatts (mW) Dual Band AC Access Point, an 802.11ac wireless access point designed to deliver long range wireless access for existing home and business networks.

Yahoo recovery progressing despite challenging online advertising market

Yahoo today reported results for the quarter ended September 30. The company posted $1.139 billion for the third quarter of 2013, a five percent decrease from the third quarter of 2012. Revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, was $1.081 billion -- a one percent decrease compared to the year-ago quarter.

Apple files appeal on portions of ITC ruling against Samsung

Could conceivably increase ban to cover three additional patents

Despite the current government shutdown, an International Trade Commission lawyer has filed a notice of Apple's intent to appeal unfavorable portions of the company's ITC win against Samsung back in August. Though the ruling awarded Apple a victory in declaring that Samsung had infringed on multiple Apple patents -- resulting in an embargo against mostly-now-discontinued Samsung smartphone models -- the iPhone maker is still pushing for a broader ban that includes more patents.

Intel meets estimates, posts third quarter revenue of $13.5 billion

As expected PC Client losses, but solid performance for Intel

US chipmaker Intel today reported third-quarter revenue of $13.5 billion, operating income of $3.5 billion, net income of $3 billion and earnings per share of $0.58. The company generated approximately $5.7 billion in cash from operations, paid dividends of $1.1 billion, and used $536 million to repurchase 24 million shares of stock.

Ireland may eliminate tax loophole exploited by Apple, others

Change expected to have little practical benefit for government budgets

The Irish government is considering the elimination of a tax loophole exploited by a number of foreign corporations, most notably Apple, reports say. Currently, Apple's Cork-based subsidiaries -- including Apple Operations International (AOI), Apple Operations Europe, Apple Sales International, and Apple Distribution International -- are "stateless" for Irish tax purposes, since they're managed and controlled from outside the country. This has allowed Apple's to dodge Ireland's 12.5 percent standard corporate tax rate, and pay less than 2 percent in taxes in the US. Between 2009 and 2011 Apple funneled billions of dollars through AOI without paying taxes to any government.

Sony reveals US ship dates for Vaio Flip and Tap PC lines

Late October release for four new models from Sony

Today, Sony Electronics announced US pricing and availability for the Vaio Flip and Tap PCs it announced earlier this year. Both the Vaio Flip in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 15.5-inch models and the 11-inch Tap tablet PC will be available before the end of October.

Google updates Fiber rules to embrace personal servers

No flex on commercial-server ban

Google has updated its Google Fiber policies, enabling users to operate personal servers on the search giant's high-speed Internet service. The language backs down from an explicit ban on all servers, leaving room for home security equipment or virtual private networks (VPNs), however it maintains a restriction on any servers used for commercial purposes by small businesses.

One of three HTC-Amazon smartpones said to be in advanced development stage

HTC could be working with Amazon on a number of smartphones, according to a report. The two are apparently in "an advanced stage of development" on the mobile devices, and while a total of three smartphones are claimed, one of the devices is said to be close to completion, though it is unlikely to be released anytime this year.

New FuelBand SE algorithms add accuracy to activity monitoring

Nike has launched an updated version of its Fuelband activity monitoring device at its NikeFuel Forum event. The Nike+ FuelBand SE retains the same basic design of the original, adding some bright accents to the main black color, but it is now able to more accurately track movements used in specific types of activities through its new algorithms, making it much harder to fool.

T-Mobile to force customers away from grandfathered plans

T-Mobile is reportedly preparing to force many of its customers to adopt new pricing schemes, putting an end to the grandfathered plans carried by some long-term subscribers. The company is said to be offering significant discounts to affected customers, with contract rates well below the pricing for new customers.

Apple confirms October 22nd press event in San Francisco

New Macs, iPads anticipated

Apple has sent out email invitations asking the press to attend an October 22nd event in San Francisco. The presentation is being hosted at the Yerba Buena Center, and will start at 10AM Pacific time. The invite features the slogan "we still have a lot to cover," and an Apple logo on top of a bed of multi-colored leaves reminiscent of Apple's iOS 7 aesthetics.

Flextronics hiring 1,700 in Austin for 'next generation' computer

Product could be new Mac Pro

Flextronics America is in the process of hiring close to 1,700 people to work on a "next generation desktop computer" at its factory in Austin, Texas, according to the Austin American-Statesman. The company has declined to go into any more detail on the product, but filed a presentation with Travis County commissioners on Monday, as part of a bid to have its facilities declared a foreign trade zone. At least 879 jobs have already been created, and Flextronics says it could add another 815 if it hits peak targets.

Sony has put two new Xperia smartphones and an upgraded smart watch on sale in the United States, off-contract. The unlocked Xperia Z Ultra LTE and Xperia Z1 have gone on sale through the company's online store, and are accompanied by the follow-up to the SmartWatch, the SmartWatch 2, which also goes on sale today.

Siri Eyes Free coming to several 2014 Chevrolet models

Feature integrated into Chevy MyLink

Siri's "Eyes Free" mode will be supported in several 2014 Chevrolet cars, GM has announced. These include the Camaro, Volt, Malibu, SS, Cruze, and Equinox. The technology will be integrated via Chevy's MyLink service. Earlier in 2013, the company's Spark and Sonic models were among the first vehicles to get Eyes Free support.

Launches in quick succession after Oct. 22 event

Release dates have been leaked for the products Apple is expected to announce on October 22nd, says French site MacG. An updated MacBook Pro is slated to launch on the 24th or 25th, followed by the fifth-generation iPad and second-gen iPad mini on the 30th or the 31st. The overhauled Mac Pro is only forecast for November 15th.

LG G Pad 8.3 heading to retail in the UK and Ireland

LG is launching its G Pad 8.3 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, in time for the holiday shopping rush. The tablet, with an 8.3-inch 1080p display, a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor with 2GB of RAM, 5MP and 1.3MP cameras, 4,600mAh battery and 16GB of storage, will cost 260 ($415) when it goes on sale.

Verizon spotted testing 80Mbps LTE network in New York

Network could reach 150Mbps maximum thanks to 4G cable licenses

Verizon could be working on increasing the speed of its phone network in New York, by performing a new LTE rollout. The carrier has apparently been spotted operating a new LTE network, which is shown to be providing network speeds of around 80Mbps downstream, and peaking at almost 23Mbps for uploads.

Apple iPad 5 set to gain iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor

A photo leak coming out of China confirms that the forthcoming fifth-generation Apple iPad will incorporate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor Home button. Touch ID debuted on the iPhone 5s with reviewers praising its ease of use and reliability. Apple says that the sapphire crystal covered fingerprint sensor built into the iPhone 5s boosts security over the traditional iOS 4-digit code, while it can also be used to authenticate purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store and iBooks Store.

Logitech has rolled out the M560 wireless mouse for Windows 8. The new mouse is one of the first to incorporate a Windows 8 menu button that sits behind the scroll wheel. When activated, the button gives users one-touch access to the App Bar, Charms Bar, Desktop and Start Screen.

Lavabit makes e-mail data available to customers for brief period

Customers able to download data blocked after company shutdown

Encrypted e-mail service Lavabit has temporarily reopened, to allow customers to retrieve their stored data after the service's shutdown. Customers will be able to change their account password on the service for a 72-hour period starting at 7pm Central Time today, with personal account data being made available to download from Friday for a limited time.

Angela Ahrendts to join Apple senior executive team

Apple has announced the hiring of Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts as its new Senior Vice President of Retail and Online stores. The position was specially created for Ahrendts, who will report directly to CEO Tim Cook when she takes up her post in the spring of 2014. Ahrendts will remain at Burberry for the time being while that company undertakes a search for a replacement.
