Apple iPad 5 set to gain iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor

A photo leak coming out of China confirms that the forthcoming fifth-generation Apple iPad will incorporate the Touch ID fingerprint sensor Home button. Touch ID debuted on the iPhone 5s with reviewers praising its ease of use and reliability. Apple says that the sapphire crystal covered fingerprint sensor built into the iPhone 5s boosts security over the traditional iOS 4-digit code, while it can also be used to authenticate purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store and iBooks Store.

Apple is rumored to be holding a special event before the end of October where the iPad 5 will be one of the centerpieces. There have been numerous photo leaks of the device in various states of assembly, but all show a redesign that follows the design language of the iPad mini. The side bezels are considerably narrower, while it is also thinner and significantly lighter. Despite this, it retains its 9.7-inch 4:3 Retina display.

One detail that has not yet been confirmed is the processor that will be powering the upgraded device. Historically, Apple has followed its flagship iPhone launch with an upgraded version of the iPhone chip. Even if Apple puts an unchanged custom A7 chip in the iPad, it will make it the first 64-bit tablet on the market. The A7 in the iPhone 5s uses a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.3GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM, while it also incorporates a quad-core PowerVR G6430 chip. An 'A7X' in the iPad 5 could upgrade RAM to 2GB, while it could conceivably go adopt a quad-core CPU and/or bump graphics cores up to 6.
