Report: Amazon, HTC collaborating on three smartphones

updated 02:28 pm EDT, Tue October 15, 2013

One of three HTC-Amazon smartpones said to be in advanced development stage

HTC could be working with Amazon on a number of smartphones, according to a report. The two are apparently in "an advanced stage of development" on the mobile devices, and while a total of three smartphones are claimed, one of the devices is said to be close to completion, though it is unlikely to be released anytime this year.

The report from the Financial Times seemingly adds a third device to the two previously rumored to be in development by the online retailer. The devices, under the "Project B" in-house name, is said to consist of a an inexpensive and conventional smartphone that could be modelled after the Kindle Fire range, as well as a second codenamed "Smith" that uses four strategically-placed cameras to track eyes and head motion to provide a 3D-style effect on the screen.

Nether HTC nor Amazon commented on the rumor, though HTC marketing chief Ben Ho revealed that it is "very focussed on building our own brand, but we have also been very open to co-branding and collaborating with carriers and other technology brands." While collaborating with other companies has a patchy track record, working with Amazon could potentially be a big help to the smartphone manufacturer, following its recent loss in its quarterly financial results, the first since the company went public. Being attached to one or more Amazon smartphones could help it generate sales at a time when it urgently needs to do so.
