Chip executive hints at holiday pricing

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich has reportedly hinted that the company's OEM partners are preparing to embrace aggressive pricing strategies ahead of the holiday shopping season. Speaking during a conference related to the company's quarterly earnings disclosure, the executive is said to have referenced Intel-powered tablets for as little as $99, Haswell notebooks starting at $299, and convertible hybrid tablets with prices as low as $349.

Some of the predictions have already been confirmed, such as Asus' Transformer Book T100 that was introduced at Intel's Developer Forum. The convertible tablet is powered by a quad-core Bay Trail processor, with a full Windows 8.1 experience and a $349 base price for a 32GB variant. Up to 10 clamshell models with Bay Trail chips, from a range of manufacturers, are expected to arrive with prices around $299.

Krzanich suggests Intel's Haswell processors will give the company an edge in the market, with significant improvements to battery life and graphics performance. He believes the balance between capabilities and price serves as a viable competitor to iOS and Android tablets.

"We continue to see touch adoption come along," Krzanich said, as quoted by ZDNet.
