Twitter's #Music feature gets no traction
Twitter may be on the verge of killing off its #Music mobile application on iOS just six months after it debuted, according to a report from AllThingsD. Sources familiar with Twitter's operations say that the company is revamping its music department, but that the #Music app may not have a real future. The app launched in April to some interest, quickly shooting up the app ranking charts. It has since seen lower adoption and engagement numbers.
Reportedly, the app was never fully integrated with Twitter's larger operations. It was developed by the team behind music site "We Are Hunted," and headed by former Twitter business development head Kevin Thau. Following its launch, sources say the app has seen "abysmal" download numbers.
The #Music app gives users playable lists of tracks by artists that were trending on Twitter, as well as suggested tracks based on a user's behavior. As recently as last month, Twitter updated #Music to feature better integration with Spotify and Rdio.
Despite these features, it has been tough going for #Music. Reportedly, the microblogging service will continue such partnerships as it already has with Spotify and Rdio. Twitter has already partnered with Apple on a trending playlist station for iTunes Radio.
