New Apple TV hardware 'delayed,' says Siegler

Possible Tuesday update could be interim spec bump

New "Apple TV hardware" rumored to be unveiled this month has been "delayed a bit," according to industry observer MG Siegler. Last month, Siegler himself indicated that the announcement was planned. In a new blog post, however, he comments that while Apple could update the existing Apple TV set-top with slightly better specifications, "the thing to be more excited about, the device with some sort of newfangled control system, doesn't seem like it's ready just yet."

The idea of an interim refresh may be supported by recent changes to Amazon listings. Rumors of more advanced TV products have been circulating for some time; shortly before his death in 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs claimed that he had "cracked" the problem of TV interfaces. What a new Apple interface might use still hasn't been made clear, but speculation has leaned towards air gestures or voice, similar to Microsoft's Kinect technology. The company has also long been rumored as working on a dedicated TV set, but reports about it have largely died off in recent months.
