LinkedIn 'Intro' embeds user profile information in iOS emails

updated 10:24 pm EDT, Wed October 23, 2013

New feature scans users' emails for contacts, inserts LinkedIn data

Business networking and communications service LinkedIn released data on a new iOS-only service that it calls "Intro." The new service gives iPhone users emails enhanced with an in-line profile of the sender and relevant information stored on the social network.

Upon signing up for the service, users must grant LinkedIn access to a non-.org email account that the information will be inserted into. LinkedIn scans the emails received by the user, with data from the service inserted into the email. Mails must not exceed 128kb in size. Intro supports iCloud, AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail.

Data provided to the user includes everything that can be seen on LinkedIn for the sender, including common contacts, and the sender's occupation and employer, if included in the profile. According to LinkedIn "when you send an email with Intro, by default we add a small snippet of your LinkedIn public profile to the bottom of your message. This snippet functions as a great email signature, and it automatically updates itself within 24 hours after you edit your LinkedIn profile."

The service is free to use. LinkedIn promises to uphold users' privacy, and not scan emails for anything more than to embed LinkedIn profile information.
