Airo takes on fitness wristband market by monitoring calorific intake

updated 08:52 am EDT, Mon October 28, 2013

Built-in spectrometer will monitor bloodstream to count calories

A new fitness monitor is attempting to trump offerings from Fitbit and Nike by automatically monitoring the quality of consumed food. The Airo wearable health monitor uses a built-in spectrometer to monitor the bloodstream using different wavelengths of light, with the wristband able to work out the calorific intake and the quality of the meal itself from this information.

Rather than tracking steps, Airo monitors the amount of exercise through calorific burn and the heart rate, rather than counting steps with an accelerometer. It also touts the ability to check the stress level of the wearer by monitoring heart rate variability, as well as sleep patterns. Lasting for up to a week from a single charge, it uses an aluminum body with a bead blasted finish, has a vibration motor for silent alarms, and communicates over Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy with both iOS and Android devices.

The company hopes to start shipping the Airo next fall, with the first 5,000 devices being sold at $149, and later, $199.
