Nokia doubles down on Windows RT tablets with Illusionist

Nokia may release a Windows RT-powered 8-inch tablet in the near future, doubling down on its investment in Microsoft's troubled mobile Windows platform. Serial tech secret leaker @evleaks tipped the existence of a device code-named Illusionist on Monday, though the tweet did not give a time frame for the Illusionist's launch. An 8-inch device would complement Nokia's existing Windows RT-powered Lumia 2520, which is a 10.1-inch slate.

Aside from the 8-inch form factor and the code name, the only information available about the device was the claim that it could feature stylus support. Windows RT has native stylus support built in, but few of the devices that have been released running the OS have had styluses packed in.

Observers note that the device could well be a scaled-down version of the 10.1-inch Lumia 2520, which has a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. Nokia revealed that device in late October, showing off an optional keyboard cover for it as well.

Aside from Microsoft with its Surface 2 tablet, Nokia is one of the only firms releasing devices that run Windows RT. The alternate version of Windows was meant to give Microsoft a foothold in the realm of ARM-based mobile processing devices, but its release engendered a good deal of consumer confusion, and many manufacturers have abandoned plans to support the platform.
