Elgato debuts Thunderbolt Drive+ portable SSD

updated 03:10 pm EST, Thu November 7, 2013

Also supports USB 3.0 systems

Elgato has launched a new portable storage drive, the Thunderbolt Drive+. The unit is based on an SSD, and capable of speeds up to 420MBps. Despite its name, it includes both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports, which also double as power sources. For durabilty's sake the drive uses an IP64-certified metal enclosure that protects against dust and water as well as impacts.

Two capacities are available: a 256GB unit costs $500, while doubling to 512GB costs $900. The product is pre-formatted as a Mac HFS+ drive, but can reformatted for Windows compatibility. Macs must be running OS X 10.6.8 or later; PC users must be on Windows 7 or 8.

I hope they're using enterprise grade SSDs, because that's an awful lot. Heck, Lacie sells 256GB SSD model for $349.

Seriously, are thunderbolt controllers $200 in bulk? Because it's time for the prices to come down.
