BlackBerry, HTC, iPhone 5s also eligible; sold gold iPhone available
As has been offered with previous popular electronics devices from Apple and other vendors, a company called Goldgenie is offering wealthy buyers of the latest iPad models the opportunity to purchase a device (or send an existing one in) and have the exterior surface plated in 24-carat gold or platinum. The company offers both traditional gold and "rose gold" (actually a mixture of gold and copper). Prices for the service start at $1,858 for a 16GB Retina iPad mini, and $1,871 for a 16GB iPad Air.
"Delivered in a beautiful customised piano finished box, the iPad Air also makes an unforgettable ready-to-go gift - whether for a loved one or high-end corporate contact," the company says, citing Denzel Washington, Kate Moss and Usain Bolt as clients. The company also offers a gold-plated iPhone 5s starting at $3,289, with a bejeweled "Swarovski Style" featuring an encrusted top and bottom bezel starting at $3,965.
Goldgenie will also gold-plate iPhones, iPads and other electronic devices that are sent in by their owners for a reduced price, starting at around $1,332. All options are available in rose gold and platinum as well, for slightly higher prices.
