KitKat launch delayed Google, Asus in fixing tablet issue

Verizon will not be attempting to certify the Google Nexus 7 for use on its LTE network until Android KitKat is released, the carrier has revealed. Though the carrier advised that it was trying to get the tablet through certification to allow it to activate on the cellular network a few months ago, it has blamed Google for the delay in the process.

A statement received by Android Police notes that "Google, Asus, and Verizon uncovered a systems issue that required Google and Asus to undertake additional work with the Jelly Bean OS running on the device." It goes on to write that, because Google was spending time on launching KitKat "rather than undertake this work," Google and Asus requested for Verizon to stop certifying the device until Android 4.4 is out for the Nexus 7.

Verizon did not explain what exactly the technical detail is, though it appears to be purely in software rather than a hardware problem. The certification is thought to take a month to complete, and based on Google attempting to release KitKat for its Nexus devices in the coming weeks, this could mean that the Nexus 7 will be usable on Verizon's LTE network by the end of this year.
