Local site prices Amazon US Kindle Fire HD under Australian retailers

Amazon has made a large push in Australia for its Kindle tablet line. The retailer has launched its Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablets in the country, coming shortly after the Kindle Paperwhite became available in stores, and is accompanied by a regional version of the Kindle Store, with Kindle Direct Publishing also opening up in the territory.

The Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HDX, and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9, all launched as part of a product line refresh in late September, will follow the Paperwhite's lead in being sold through Dick Smith and Big W in the country, rather than through Amazon Australia itself, according to Engadget. The Kindle Fire HD is available through the national retailers now, while the Kindle Fire HDX in seven-inch and 8.9-inch forms will be shipping on November 26th and December 10th for AUS $329 ($305) and AUS $479 ($445) respectively.

Even so, the Australian site advises that customers will be able to buy it via the US Amazon store and have it shipped to them, though oddly at a cheaper price. The local retailer options for the Kindle Fire HD are priced at AUS $189 ($175), while the Amazon.com version including shipping is priced at US $169.

The Kindle Store will be offering over 2 million e-books and more than 400,000 Kindle-exclusive titles in the country, including over 26,000 free English-language titles. Amazon is also going to the trouble of adding a number of books from local authors, including Rachael Johns and Sally Morgan, along with classic Australian titles through Text Publishing and Indigenous publisher Magabala books.

The extension of Kindle Direct Publishing to Australia lets local authors earn up to 70 percent royalties on sales to Kindle customers in Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK, and other countries, with authors able to price their titles and receive royalty payments in Australian dollars.
