Moto X sales disappoint with just over 500K sold in Q3

Motorola is thought to have shipped just over 500,000 unitsof its highly customizable flagship handset, the Moto X reports the Wall Street Journal. The estimated figures were provided by Strategy Analytics, following Motorola's decision to cut the entry price of the handset from $200 on a two-year plan to just $100 on Monday. Motorola, a wholly owned Google subsidiary, launched the Moto X to considerable fanfare in August, touting its X8 chipset and the ability for users to pick the color highlights and accents for the device.

The Moto X debuted with a some marquee software enhancements, previously unseen on Android devices, including its ability to respond to voice commands when in sleep mode, and show notifications on its OLED display, also while in sleep mode. However, unlike most flagship Android handsets released this year, Motorola opted to pursue an X8 system architecture that relied on only a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor instead of a quad-core chipset, which may have put off some users even if its performance was still competitive.

Motorola is now said to be pinning its volume sales hopes the Moto G, which is expected to debut November 13. Its leaked specifications indicated that it centers on an HD 4.5-inch display, but switch to a quad-core processor. It is expected to ship with Android 4.3 'Jelly Bean' on board, while it could retail for as low as $250 off-contract. With a flooded Android market, even with Google's backing, it could still prove difficult for Motorola to turn around its fortunes.
