Samsung updates Galaxy Core in Taiwan with less RAM, storage

Samsung Galaxy Core Plus launches quietly in Taiwan

Samsung has launched an updated version of an entry-level smartphone, one that has surfaced with little fanfare. The Galaxy Core Plus, launched in Taiwan, takes after the Galaxy Core by offering a 4.3-inch, 800x480-resolution display with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a five-megapixel camera, though some aspects have apparently been downgraded.

The original Galaxy Core has 1GB of RAM, and though the "Plus" part of its name would suggest an improvement, the Galaxy Core Plus ships with 786MB of memory instead. Though this is an odd move, Android Beat believes that it is a logistical decision, in that the company currently produces 786MB RAM chips for devices such as the Galaxy Note 3, and it would rather produce memory in that capacity rather than the 512MB chips. The amount of storage has also reduced from its predecessor, down from 8GB to 4GB. While its high-point is in having Android 4.2 rather than Android 4.1, the rest of the specification list for the two devices remains the same.

The Galaxy Core Plus is shipping off-contract for NT$7,990 ($270), though considering the price, potential users may have better luck opting for an older yet higher-specification device at that price. Samsung is unlikely to ship the Galaxy Core to Europe and the US.
