Microsoft shows off CSI-like Cybercrime Center in Redmond

Project brings awareness to botnets, other threats

Microsoft has built a new Cybercrime Center headquarters to highlight its fight against cybercrime. The Redmond-based project, which the company readily admits is a "CSI kind of place," appears to be focused on building awareness of potential threats and promoting Microsoft's efforts to combat cybercrime.

"It's like a functional movie set," says Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit general counsel David Finn. "But there is real-life cybercrime going on, and these are real-life labs to fight it in a cutting-edge way. This is not a TV show - we have important cases we're working on right now, right on the other side of the window."

The company suggests half of online adults have been cybercrime victims in the past year, while cybercrime is said to cost the global economy up to $500 billion annually. Visitors to the headquarters are treated with information about specific cases that Microsoft has worked on, including the Citadel botnet that is believed to have infected millions of computers and used to steal approximately $500 million from businesses and individuals.

"I believe that the work at the Cybercrime Center gives the company a great opportunity to do good for the world and do well for ourselves at the same time," said Microsoft's general counsel and executive vice president of corporate and legal affairs, Brad Smith.
