Chip supports 4K recording, local playback, output to TV

Qualcomm has introduced its next-generation flagship Snapdragon processor, which brings support for Ultra HD features. The Snapdragon 805 is said to be capable of recording 4K video from the device's integrated camera, with support for 4K stream decoding and playback on a high-resolution mobile display or via a connected 4K television.

Aside from the video features, the chip integrates Qualcomm's Krait 450 CPU that runs at up to 2.5 GHz per core with up to 25.6 GBps memory bandwidth. The CPU is paired with a new Adreno 420 GPU, which adds support for advanced graphics features such as hardware tessellation and geometry shaders.

Devices equipped with the Snapdragon 805 will be able to support LTE Category 4 technology for peak data rates of up to 150Mbps, along with dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi at over 600 Mbps.

The new processor is being sampled now and expected to be available in consumer devices by the first half of 2014.
