Comcast launches Xfinity TV Store with cable box movie purchases

Xfinity TV Store offers movies weeks before DVD releases

Comcast has launched a service that sells movie and TV show streams and downloads to customers on set-top boxes, one that leaked late last week. The Comcast Xfinity TV Store extends Comcast's existing video-on-demand free and rental offerings with an option to have purchases permanently viewable in the future.

Spotted by Engadget, the Xfinity TV Store allows for purchases to take place through the cable box itself or through the web-based version of the store, with prices appearing to be in line with other competing services. Content can also be downloaded to an iOS or Android device via its supporting app, though it currently does not support HD streaming or playback from a mobile device. The service also boasts that a number of films will be available to buy weeks before their respective DVD or Blu-ray releases.

Customers choosing to unsubscribe from all Xfinity services will be able to retain their purchases, but will have 60 days to transfer their account from a Comcast ID-based version to an Xfinity On Demand-specific account.
