Microsoft working on multi-device synchronization for Skype updates

updated 12:42 pm EST, Mon November 25, 2013

Call states, message notifications to synchronize in Skype in future

Microsoft will be making some changes to Skype, in order to address a number of problems on the messaging platform. Skype product manager Jeff Kunins revealed that the company is testing updates that will allow for full message synchronization across multiple devices, among a number of other items set to improve the service overall.

Cross-device synchronization will include updating all versions of the client on all devices when a message has been read by the account holder, with only the active device receiving message and call notifications, according to Kunins in an interview with The Verge. "You'll see us very soon begin rolling that out so users get the benefit of cloud history, synced read state across all your devices," said Kunins.

A similar problem with call state synchronizing is also being worked on, where one device will continue to ring despite another having already accepted the call. This won't be rectified at the same time as the messaging, but is described as a "fun bug we're working on" by Kunins. The Skype app for Windows Phone will be updated at the same time as the notifications, with load times said to improve as part of an update, but more changes are planned for next year, with the Skype team apparently in discussions with developers working on Windows Phone 8.1.

There is no word as to when exactly the updates will be rolling out to devices, though Kunins advises that it will be "pretty soon."

In other words, Microsoft has not completely broken Skype yet, but they are working on it.

Tweaks to the features matter little as long as Skype for a Mac has such a dreadful UI, one so bad I gave up on it a couple of years ago. Has it improved since then? I've not heard anything along that line.

Just like Windows, with each new update from Microsoft, Skype's interface gets more cluttered inefficient and wasteful...

    Long live Skype V3.8,
hope it´s not killed before an alternative comes up
