Google invites developers to purchase Google Glass hardware

Explorer Program continues to expand

Following reports of a boost in Google Glass production, the search company has begun inviting more developers to participate in the pilot program. An invitation e-mail posted by Ubergizmo suggests the expanded availability is still limited to approved invitees and retains the current $1500 price tag, though it is viewed as another small step toward the anticipated public launch.

"We're inviting you, as a developer, to purchase Glass, become an Explorer, and join us in taking the next step in developing for Glass," the brief e-mail reads.

Several recent reports point to collaboration between Google and eyewear companies, as the search giant is said to be considering alternative frame designs and establishing partnerships for prescription lenses. Google may be preparing its own showrooms in a small number of locations, however the wider rollout is expected to bring the eyewear into existing optometrists offices around the country.

The public launch is not expected until 2014 or later, following extensive beta testing via the Explorer Program. The company is not limiting the pilot to just developers, providing a sign-up page for anyone to apply and wait for an open spot as the program continues to grow.
