YouTube soon likely to pack 'Music Pass' with offline listening

Google to leverage YouTube's popularity as listening platform

Google will in the near future likely add a music listening feature to its YouTube app, according to new information hidden inside the Android YouTube app. Android Police took a look inside version 5.3 of the YouTube app, finding a number of strings that hint at a forthcoming music subscription service. Reportedly, Google's YouTube music service may feature no advertising, marking a considerable difference between the YouTube music service and Google's existing Play Music app for Android, iOS, and the web.

The strings discovered by Android Police contain mention of the terms "Music Pass," "Offline playback," "Uninterrupted music," and "No ads." They also mention "millions of songs" and "background listening."

Google has been rumored to be plotting a YouTube-based music service for some time now. Doing so would give the search giant two music offerings, with the other being its Google Play music streaming service available on Android, iOS, and on the Web.

YouTube, though, could prove an even more powerful music platform than Google Play. According to a Nielsen survey from earlier this year, the free streaming service is already the most popular music platform among American teenagers, with two out of three reporting that they go to YouTube to play music more than any other platform, including Apple's iTunes.

The recent peek inside the YouTube app also found that Google may be preparing to allow users to watch videos while offline. Google has not commented on when these features might go live, but their presence in within the APK would seem to indicate that a launch will occur in the near future.
