Sony's new console off to hot start

Sony's PlayStation 4 video game console has sold more than 2.1 million units in the two weeks since it launched in mid-November. The announcement of the milestone came by way of a post from the PlayStation Europe blog on Tuesday. A good deal of the 1.1 million sales since November 15 have no doubt come from the launch of the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Australasia.

In the first 24 hours of availability in the United States, the PS4 moved one million units. The additional 1.1 million units in the following 14 or so days bodes well for Sony's new console, as there had been concerns about the attractiveness of more expensive home consoles in light of the growing popularity of gaming on mobile devices.

Sony announced yesterday that it would be expanding the feature set of its PS4, bringing promised features to life on the new device in the coming year. Among those new features will be a game streaming capability that Sony first showed off at this year's E3.

Sony's chief gaming rival Microsoft has also released a console, the Xbox One. That device also went on to sell a million in its first 24 hours of availability. The Xbox One, though, launched across more countries than did the PS4.
