Upgrade to Canon EOS M retains sensor, adds Wi-Fi

Canon has launched a revised version of its EOS M mirrorless camera. The upgraded EOS M2, announced in Japan, retains the appearance of the original but manages to improve its autofocus speed to approximately 2.3 times as fast as its predecessor, as well as using its Hybrid CMOS AF II to scan over 80 percent of what the viewfinder is able to see.

The APS-C CMOS sensor is the same as before, with the 18-megapixel version using an identical DIGIC 5 image processor, reports Slashgear. One-shot AF and Live F multi-point auto focus is touted, as well as an ISO range of up to 25,600. Shrinking approximately 8 percent in volume compared to the EOS M, it also includes Wi-Fi that can be controlled through an iOS or Android mobile app. Though Canon has not given much in the way of detail for the camera, it is thought to have a similar 4.3fps burst mode, as well as the ability to record 1080p video at 24, 25, and 30fps.

Canon has yet to price the EOS M2, but it will be available midway through this month in Japan, with black and white color options. A release further afield may have to wait until early 2014.
