Beats Music streaming service to launch next month

Beats Music, the streaming music site spun out from the maker of the popular premium headphones, will make its debut in January of next year, it was revealed on Wednesday. The site for the service has gone live, and users can now register a user name for when it goes live next year. The particulars of Beats' new music offering are as yet unknown, but the company will likely reveal them in the weeks leading up to its unveiling.

Technology-wise, Beats Music was built off of MOG, a music streaming service that beats bought last year for $14 million. At the time of the acquisition, Beats kept MOG's management team in place, though the company named Ian Rogers CEO in January.

Until now, the project has been in private alpha under the name Project Daisy. Reportedly, Beats' offering will center more on providing a service to "people who know and love music," with significant feedback from celebrities, artists, and other influencers. Some reports have users of the service being able to listen along with the current or recent music stream of any particular artist or celebrity.

Beats Music will emerge into an already remarkably crowded Internet music segment. Apple has both its iTunes and iTunes Radio offerings, while Google has its Play Music offerings with buying, streaming, and radio capabilities. There is also Microsoft with Xbox Music, Pandora Internet radio, and Spotify, which has made a name for itself over the past few years.

Beats Music will try to build on the brand popularity of Beats' highly successful line of premium audio products. Beats Music was spun out of Beats Electronics into its own independent firm, boasting $60 million in initial funding.
