Sky updates Sky+ app on iOS, introduces Sky Go app for Android tablets

Remote record expanded to include on-demand programming

British broadcaster Sky has made a number of updates to its online services. The Sky+ app for iOS and Android has received some usability updates, Sky Go for Android now has a version specifically made for tablets, and its Sky Store streaming rentals service has been opened up to all of the UK, including those not subscribing to Sky's satellite TV offering.

The update for the Sky+ app allows users to view a full selection of shows from the on-demand sections viewable on the Sky+HD set-top box, with selected Showcase, Catch Up TV, Box Sets or Movies able to be set to download to the box from the phone itself, reports Pocket-Lint. This builds upon the app's existing ability to set future show recordings on the set-top box, as well as offering a gesture-based remote control.

The Sky Go for Tablets app is available to download on Google Play, and allows for viewing of live and on-demand TV shows and films on a mobile device when linked to an existing subscriber account. The new app works with the "majority of Android tablets" measuring 7 inches or higher, reports The Next Web, though the existing Sky Go app will work as normal for smartphone use. Sky plans to merge the two apps into a single offering in the future.

The Sky Store, previously available through the Sky+HD set-top box, is now available through a web browser, Now TV, Roku, and YouView set-top boxes. It typically offers recent cinema releases for rental at £3.50 each ($5.70) and classic films between £1 and £2 ($1.65 to $3.30) for up to 48 hours.
