Apple demands Samsung pay quarter of $60 million in legal fees

Apple dropped $60 million fighting Samsung in US

Apple's ongoing patent infringement actions against Samsung have cost the iPhone maker more than $60 million in legal fees, it was revealed on Thursday. Reuters reported on a new legal filing from Apple that pointed to the total cost Apple has paid to its U.S.-based legal team in order to pursue litigation against the South Korean tech giant. The figure, while sizable, is dwarfed by the potential damages payout Apple may receive for its initial victories, which amount to roughly $900 million.

Apple's attorneys hold that Samsung, having been roundly defeated twice in U.S. patent litigation -- first in an initial verdict and again in the recent follow-up -- should pay for roughly a fourth of Apple's legal fees. Apple asked Judge Lucy Koh to order Samsung to pay $15.7 million of the fees. Such an additional award would "[flow] quite naturally" from the jury's willfulness verdict, according to Apple's legal counsel.

Apple received "a significant discount" on law firm Morrison & Foerster's usual rate due to its longtime client relationship with the firm. It had, through last month, paid Morrison & Foerster roughly $60 million in fees. Its other main outside firm, WilmerHale, received roughly $2 million in fees for the week-long damages retrial that recently concluded in Apple's favor.

Juries have awarded Apple a total of about $930 million, down from the original $1.05 billion verdict handed down last year. The additional fees would bring Apple's total close to $950 million.
