Twitter-by-text coming to mobile phones without Internet access

Twitter bringing microblogging to entry-level mobile phones

Popular microblogging service Twitter is working to bring its 140-character messaging to mobile phone users whose devices don't have access to the Internet. Reuters on Thursday reported that the company was working with U2opia Mobile, a Singapore-based startup, to bring Twitter content to non-smartphones in the near future. Via a simple process, users will be able to download the latest data from Twitter directly to their phones.

U2opia uses the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) telecom protocol. That system allows services like Twitter and Facebook - with which U2opia has a similarly structured deal - to push data to mobile devices without a data connection. U2opia also works with Google to push Google Talk data to non-smartphones.

Users simply dial a code into their devices, and the service returns a feed of the popular trending topics on Twitter. U2opia CEO Sumesh Menon says that the 140-character limit of Twitter goes hand in glove with U2opia's service offerings, as Twitter is a very text-driven social network.

The service will not be able to deliver images and video. It will, though, help Twitter increase its presence in the developing world, where eight out of 10 people are not accessing data through their phones.
