T-Mobile boosts LTE in North Dallas, will offer data-less price plan

Bandwidth increase in North Dallas uses MetroPCS spectrum

T-Mobile is putting the spectrum gained from its merger with MetroPCS to good use, by upgrading the bandwidth of its LTE spectrum in North Dallas. News of the speed increase comes at the same time as details of a new data-less price plan are revealed, one which the carrier is launching in the United States later today.

The Dallas bandwidth increase took place just before Thanksgiving, according to All Things D. The "20-by-20" upgrade is effectively double the bandwidth that T-Mobile has offered to the majority of other markets, though the carrier hopes to expand it to 90 percent of the top 25 US markets in the next year, along with a "10-by-10" LTE service in 40 of the top 50 markets by the end of the year.

While the spectrum comes as part of the MetroPCS deal, the extra bandwidth does not require a device upgrade by consumers to take advantage of it, as all LTE devices will be compatible. In contrast, Sprint Spark, a bandwidth-increasing project from the competing carrier, will require updates for specific devices to work.

The new Unlimited Talk and Text plan for T-Mobile will be offered to customers as a limited promotional plan, the carrier has confirmed to TmoNews. The new plan will provide unlimited minutes and text messages for $35 per month as a prepaid offering, though it will not include any data. By comparison, the lowest existing plan from T-Mobile itself offers unlimited talk, text, and Internet, with the first 500MB at LTE speeds for $50, or as part of a Wal-Mart offer, unlimited web and texts with 100 minutes for $30.

T-Mobile prepay already includes voice and texting. They should include a per-megabyte data plan too.
