Microsoft pushes back against 4chan-born backwards compatibility prank

Microsoft's Major Nelson took to Twitter on Friday to tell owners of the company's Xbox One game console not to try to perform a "hack" that would supposedly give their consoles compatibility with Xbox 360 games. The hack, which originated on Internet message boards as a prank, instead will likely render one's console useless. Major Nelson informed readers of his Twitter account that there is no way of making their Xbox One consoles compatible with Xbox 360 games.

The hack has six steps, and it results in the opening of the Developer Console, which allows for the alteration of a number of essential features for the device. According to the hack, users should change the sandbox ID on their devices, and the prescribed change results in the Xbox One becoming stuck in a constant reboot cycle.

It is unclear whether Microsoft will shut off access to the Developer Console at any point in the future. The company could possibly do so by way of a firmware patch to change or eliminate the button combination that grants access to the feature. Aside from Major Nelson's tweet, the company has not responded to the issue.
