Amazon extends AmazonFresh same-day groceries to San Francisco

updated 07:58 am EST, Thu December 12, 2013

Same-day fresh produce delivery from Amazon costs $299 per year

Amazon has expanded its five-year-old grocery delivery service to San Francisco. Previously only available in Seattle and Los Angeles, AmazonFresh provides groceries and other fresh produce to customers with either same or next-day delivery, as the online retailer continues to expand its range of services and delivery options.

According to AllThingsD, customers are able to order fresh produce, such as fish, which will be delivered from Amazon's own warehouses at the same time as other normal Amazon products. Orders before 10am will arrive later that day, while other orders placed before 10pm will be received by the customer the following morning.

Those looking to take up Amazon on their offer will be paying a lot for the privilege. After a 30-day trial, customers will have to pay a $299 annual membership to Prime Fresh to continue using the service, though this also incorporates the existing $80 Amazon Prime two-day delivery offer.

Same-day delivery of goods in San Francisco is an area of interest for a number of companies. Earlier this year, Google rolled out its Google Shopping Express service in the Bay Area peninsula, providing deliveries from a variety of retailers in the area. Auction site eBay is upping the ante by offering free delivery for eBay Now orders until Christmas Eve, with the multi-retailer service operating in San Jose, Chicago, and parts of New York City, as well as San Francisco and the Bay Area.
