Companies to focus on mobile development

Chip maker ARM has announced that it is set to acquire Geomerics, a startup that specializes in lighting effects for game developers. The companies are said to have been directly collaborating on projects for several years, however the buyout is promised to bring a tighter focus on improving the graphics capabilities of ARM's mobile processors.

Geomerics promotes its Enlighten technology as "fully real-time" global illumination, aiming to bring photo-realistic lighting effects in 3D graphics. The effects are said to have been utilized in popular games such as Battlefield, Need for Speed and Medal of Honor, among others.

"The innovative technologies being developed by Geomerics are already revolutionizing the console gaming experience and are set to rapidly accelerate the transition to photo realistic graphics in mobile," said ARM executive Pete Hutton.

Chips utilizing ARM architecture currently dominate the mobile industry, powering Android and iOS devices alike. The technology has also pushed into the PC market via Windows RT, serving as an alternative to x86-based chips produced by AMD and Intel.

"This combination of ARM and Geomerics accelerates the realization of our vision to bring next generation console graphics to mobile devices," said Geomerics COO Chris Doran.
