Skype update brings picture-in-picture to Android tablets

Update lets Skype users keep chatting in other apps

Skype has rolled out an update to its Android app that lets tablet users continue to video chat even when they have gone into other apps. The new picture-in-picture feature pops up a small Skype window that persists even as a user moves away from the main Skype app. The update also contains a number of other additions, as well as fixes to assorted compatibility issues.

Version 4.5 of Skype for Android's picture-in-picture feature is only available for Android tablets, but it will still pop up a message asking for permission to draw on top of other apps when using a phone. Skype is working to address the issue.

The update also brings a new way for tablet users to move from one letter to another in the contact list. Users simply pinch the contact list to zoom out to a view of the alphabet. They can then tap the desired letter to move to that portion of the list.

In addition to the above changes, Skype 4.5 adds improved Video Instant Messaging functionality, as well as fixes for operation on the latest Samsung phones. Skype has also added compatibility for the Hudl tablet, fixed crashes on the Nexus 5, and made drop-down filter selections on the People tab persistent.

The new update is available as a free download in the Google Play Store. The size of the download varies according to the device, as does the necessary version of Android.
