YouTube abandons 100 subscriber limit for live streaming

YouTube has abandoned the 100-subscriber minimum for access to live streaming for all users. The policy change, revealed on Thursday in a post to the YouTube Creators Blog, lets all verified YouTube accounts create and stream live events to watchers, no matter how popular they are. The policy update also adds the option to launch a Google+ Hangout On Air directly from within the YouTube Live events manager.

Live streaming initially opened as a very closed feature, with only a few YouTube-selected content producers able to access the feature. YouTube then opened the feature up to channels with at least 1,000 subscribers, then 100.

YouTube Live allows for real-time tanscoding in the cloud, with users sending the highest-quality stream possible and YouTube automatically making that stream available in all of its possible resolutions and formats. It also allows users to track viewers' stats, and it supports multiple camera angles, closed captions, and more.

In order to take advantage of the live streaming feature, users will have to verify their YouTube accounts by phone. That will require entering a phone number, upon which Google will send them a verification code via voice call or SMS.
