LG preps Chrome OS all-in-one

At next month's Consumer Electronics Show, South Korean manufacturer LG will reveal a new all-in-one desktop powered by Google's Chrome OS software. LG announced the device on Tuesday, touting it as a streamlined device well suited for schools, hotels, and call centers, as well as other businesses that need simple computing portals without the financial and support costs of installing a full PC. The Chromebase will be the first all-in-one device to run Google's fledgling, browser-based operating system, which appears increasingly attractive to manufacturers looking to diversify their offerings as the traditional PC market has largely plateaued.

The Chromebase will pack a 21.5-inch widescreen display outputting at 1920 x 1080 Full HD with 178-degree viewing angles. Inside, it will have a fourth-generation Intel Celeron CPU to run Google's desktop OS. It will also have a 1.3-megapixel webcam, microphone, and a pair of built-in 5W speakers.

In addition to those specs, the Chrome OS all-in-one will have 2GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD for internal storage. That latter spec will limit the amount of material that can be stored directly on the device, but Chrome is largely built to rely on cloud storage, with features such as games and other apps accessible through the Chrome browser. It will also have three USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0 port, meaning users can potentially store additional content on flash drives.

The all-in-one will come with its own keyboard, mouse, and cable organizer. It will also pack an HDMI-in port, meaning that it may be possible to use it as an additional monitor for another system.

LG has given no information on the device's future availability or price point. These factors, presumably, will be revealed when LG shows off the device at CES. Electronista will be on the scene in Las Vegas to give updates on the device when it is revealed.
