Dish, Sprint collaborate for home broadband over LTE trial

updated 05:22 am EST, Wed December 18, 2013

Home broadband service will use 2.5GHz Sprint LTE spectrum

Dish is working with Sprint to develop a fixed wireless home broadband service for areas underserved by normal wire-based broadband, the company has announced. Using Sprint's 4G LTE network, the service will use the 2.5GHz bands Sprint acquired from Clearwire, with Dish installing either an indoor or ruggedized outdoor router with high-gain antennas at the customer's location.

The initial service will be trialled in Corpus Christi, Texas sometime in the middle of 2014, though only in a limited number of areas. If the trial is successful, Dish claims that it will expand the project into additional markets. The project also brings Sprint in line with AT&T and Verizon, with both competing carriers already offering home broadband over LTE.

This is the first major project Dish and Sprint have worked together on since Dish failed in its attempt to merge with the carrier for $25.5 billion, losing to an offer from SoftBank. Tom Cullen, Dish executive vice president of Corporate Development, said "We both bring distinct skills, not the least of which for Dish is a workforce of professional technicians who visit thousands of homes every day performing professional installations for both video and broadband." Michael Schwartz, Cullen's counterpart at Sprint, advised "This trial with Dish has great potential as it combines the key capabilities and assets of both companies to provide another option to customers with limited broadband access."
