Taiwan prosecutors bring charges against HTC employees

Several HTC employees, including a vice president for design, are now facing charges in Taiwan for allegedly falsifying expenses, taking kickbacks, and leaking company secrets. Thomas Chien, an HTC design VP, allegedly leaked the interface design for an as yet unreleased smartphone, the TaiPei District Prosecutors Office told The Wall Street Journal. The other individuals facing charges have not been identified, but they are said to have worked in collaboration with Chien, with the eventual goal having been to form a new company along with the entities they leaked the information to.

Chien and five other HTC employees will face charges, Taiwanese authorities said. Also under indictment are three individuals from connected suppliers, though the prosecutors did not identify the suppliers.

In addition to leaking company secrets, the employees are charged with a breach of trust, as prosecutors say they received about NT$33.57 million (US$1.1 million) from falsified expenses and kickbacks from suppliers.

Chien and HTC development director Wu Chien-Hung were arrested in September, along with other employees, under suspicion of stealing trade secrets. At the time, HTC released a statement saying that the company expects "employees to observe and practice the highest levels of integrity and ethics."
