Samsung preps new Chromebook for release next year

Samsung Electronics will release a new Chromebook next year, according to a new report. Business Korea on Monday said that the South Korean tech giant will push out a new Chromebook in the near future, with a possible unveiling set for next year's Consumer Electronics Show. Samsung, though, has pushed back against that latter prediction.

"We are planning to unveil no laptops during the CES 2014 period," a Samsung representative said.

Reportedly, the new Chromebook will pack Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor, an application processor based on "big.LITTLE" technology with four low-power cores and four high-performance cores. For a graphics chip, the device would have a Mali-T628.

The device's display is said to output at 2560 x 1600, continuing in Samsung's trend of packing high-density displays into an increasing number of its products. That display is said to measure about 12 inches, but it could be smaller.

The new Chromebook is also said to have storage options of 16GB or 32GB, as well as USB 3.0 support, a seven-hour battery, and a weight of just over 1kg. It will reportedly retail for between $250 and $300.

Should the new Chromebook materialize, it would be but the latest in a line of Chrome OS-powered devices to hit the market in what has become a small but growing segment. Chromebooks are typically cheaper than traditional computers, a fact that makes them attractive to a number of manufacturers looking to attract buyers on the low end. They are also attractive to schools and businesses, which are then able to provide low-cost, simple devices that perform a bare minimum of necessary tasks.
