iPhone only smartphone with increased activity

Apple devices remained firmly in control of North American web traffic through Christmas, but the iPad lost some ground to devices from Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung, according to new Chitika analytics. The data was collected from "tens of millions" of devices between December 20th and the 29th, and used to gauge the growth or decline of various brands. Apple's iPhone was the only smartphone to gain share, advancing 1.8 percent to 54.3 percent of the market.

Samsung dipped 0.8 percent to a 23.7 percent phone share; LG fell 0.4 percent to 3.9, and HTC shrank 0.3 percent to 3.7. Motorola fell 0.1 percent to 3.5 percent, while its parent company -- Google -- saw the share of its Nexus phones merely hold flat at 0.7 percent. The combined pool of devices from smaller manufacturers was reduced 0.3 percent to 10.1.

Apple's iPad slipped 1.3 percent in the tablet market, but still retained overwhelming control with a 76.1 percent share. The biggest beneficiary appears to have been Amazon, which grew 0.6 percent to 9.4 on the back of new Kindle Fires. Samsung advanced 0.3 percent to 5.9, and Microsoft went up 0.5 percent to 2.3. Google saw its Nexus tablets inch ahead 0.1 percent to a 2 percent share.

The iPad has been steadily losing share for months. As recently as July, the device represented 84.3 percent of Chitika's traffic.
