updated 12:26 pm EST, Fri January 3, 2014

Can automatically detect sleeping without user prompts

Basis Science has launched an upgrade to its Basis B1 fitness tracker, by introducing a new model, at the same time as announcing a software update. The new Carbon Steel edition adds polished chrome details to the tracker hardware, while the new Advanced Sleep Analysis software will help users monitor and improve their sleep patterns.

The Carbon Steel design is said to have been based on a year of user feedback. Aside from the metallic upgrade to the appearance, it also includes stretchable, silicone black straps that offer flexibility and allows the skin to breathe. Basis has started selling the Carbon Steel Edition through its website for $199, with Best Buy stores preparing to stock it from February 2nd.

The software update will allow the Basis B1 to monitor REM sleep, deep sleep, and light sleep throughout the sleep cycle. A daily "Personal Sleep Score" will give a mark to overall sleep quality, with the B1 also able to recognize when sleep begins automatically, rather than requiring a button to be pressed or other actions. The Advanced Sleep Analysis update will roll out to the iOS and Android Basis apps on January 21st.
