Mobile OS paired with big screen

Acer has introduced the TA272 HUL, bringing Google's Android operating system to a traditional desktop all-in-one. The device is powered by Nvidia's quad-core Tegra processor-like many tablets and other mobile devices-but inside a much larger housing featuring a 27-inch touchscreen with 2560x1440 resolution.

Despite its mobile OS, the TA272 aims to achieve a premium aesthetic with a brushed-metal finish, transparent base, two front-facing speakers and an asymmetrical stand. The display tilt can be positioned between 30 and 90 degrees, while HDMI and DisplayPort connectors enable it to be used as an external monitor for other Windows or Mac computers.

The new all-in-one provides more evidence that Acer is fulfilling its promise to provide more non-Windows devices, after the company posted a second-quarter loss. CEO Jim Wang pointed to opportunities with Android and Google's Chrome OS, which he hopes will contribute to 30 percent of company revenues by 2014.

Acer will be showing off its latest hardware next week at CES in Las Vegas. A release date for the TA272 remains unclear, though the device is expected to carry a $1099 retail price.
