Microsoft may rename Windows interface

Microsoft may be preparing to rename the "Modern" interface that defines its Windows 8 operating system, or at least to shorten the title. As ZDNet pointed out this week, the software giant filed last month for a trademark on the term "Mod." The report notes that, while it seems almost certainly related to the Windows interface, the filing could indicate either a renaming of the whole tile system or a special, touch-centric build of Microsoft's Office productivity suite.

"Mod," of course, would be a shortening of "Modern," which is the appellation Microsoft has been using to describe the tiled interface of Windows 8 and Windows RT since August of 2012. Prior to that, Microsoft had been calling the design language "Metro." A legal dispute with a partner company, though, caused Microsoft to abandon that nomenclature and move to "Modern."

In the filing, "Mod" is said to be used for "Computer operating system software; computer software; computer hardware; computer peripherals; computer accessories; mobile computing devices; (and) mobile communication devices."

Microsoft has given no indication of if or when it might move Mod into the mainstream for referring to its interface. The coming year may hold big changes for Windows as a platform, as Microsoft will push to further unify its desktop, mobile, console, and smartphone builds of the operating system.
