Pebble Steel leaks, shows watch with metal casing, Gorilla Glass

updated 09:26 am EST, Mon January 6, 2014

Should be announced later today

Just ahead of a planned announcement later today, Pebble's new watch -- the Steel -- has reportedly leaked to the public. Its name stems from a switch from a plastic housing to metal. Two colors options are expected: one using brushed stainless steel, and another painted matte black.

The Steel should retain the waterproofing of its plastic counterpart, and also gain Corning's Gorilla Glass, improving the durability of its e-ink screen. Buyers are expected to have a choice between metal and leather straps. Pricing for the Steel is said to be $240, a full $100 more than the original Pebble. A launch is anticipated by the end of January.

Ugly. That's all I have to say. If I'm going to wear a watch again, it has to be stylish yet unobtrusive. I'm not wearing something that these.

^^ not to mention that band is going to scratch the crap out of my MacBook... Did Pebble not think about the hipsters that are going to early adopt their product?

I was worried that Pebble would steel Apple's thunder for its upcoming iWatch by coming out with a stylish next generation device. Phew!, that worry was unnecessary - the new version is just as clunky looking as the original.

Do people actually wear watches these days with the dawn of smartphone (and flip-phone)? I don't. Stuff like this add to your body weight. Not to mention these watches need constant charging. It's like going backward when you have to constantly rewinding the key.

"Watch" out. Apple's upcoming iWatch will probably be just another "Hobby" sitting right next to Apple TV. I mean you just paid $400 plus for your new iPhone and do you really want to spend another $300 for a watch that relying on your iPhone? I think Apple's new iWatch should be $99 just to crush all competitors.
