$1 billion in December alone
App Store sales topped $10 billion in 2013, Apple has announced. The company notes that $1 billion of that was generated in December alone, on the back of 3 billion app downloads that month. Apple adds that developers have taken in about $15 billion during the App Store's lifetime.
In its press release, Apple highlights apps that have taken advantage of iOS 7, such as AirBnb, Evernote, Yahoo, Tumblr, and Pinterest. Titles like Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga, QuizUp, and Clumsy Ninja are cited as popular apps by international developers. Companies to watch in 2014 are said to include Duolingo, Simogo, Frogmind, Plain Vanilla, Atypical Games, Lemonista, BASE, and Savage Interactive.
Notably absent from the statistics is the performance of the Mac App Store. The iOS App Store -- the one Apple is referring to today -- is far more profitable, however, reflecting (and fueling) the success of the iPhone and iPad.
