Casio releases iPhone-compatible STB-1000 sports watch

updated 03:52 pm EST, Tue January 7, 2014

Compatible with handful of iPhone apps

Casio has launched the STB-1000, a new sports watch with Bluetooth 4.0 LE support. The watch tracks data such as pulse, elapsed time, and running speed and distance; for cyclists, it can monitor speed and pedal rotations. Some basic functions include daily alarms and countdown timers. The watch is water-resistant to a depth of 100m, and has a two-year battery life.

Bluetooth compatibility allows the watch to control media playback on an iPhone, receive call and email notifications, and share fitness data with iPhone apps. Only a handful of apps are currently supported though, namely Wahoo Fitness and Abvio's Runmeter, Walkmeter, and Cyclemeter titles. Casio is promising to extend the number of compatible apps in the future.

Because the watch relies on Bluetooth 4.0 LE, only more recent iPhones -- namely the 4S, 5, 5s, and 5c -- can access fitness data. Pricing for the watch is currently unavailable.

How can you supposedly launch a new product (Casio has launched the STB-1000) and not launch a price (Pricing for the watch is currently unavailable)?
