Spotify turns on subscription-free shuffling in iOS app

Linear playlists still require Premium

Spotify has issued an update of its iOS app, enabling subscription-free streaming promised last month. Non-paying users can now stream any playlist, whether curated or self-created, but only in shuffle mode. Linear playback requires a Premium subscription, which costs $10 per month.

Until recently, any use of Spotify's mobile apps demanded Premium. That may have hurt the company as it competed against offerings from the likes of Pandora, and more recently iTunes Radio. Some music streaming services -- namely Rdio -- continue to gate mobile access.
